Polarimetric SAR Tomography of forest scenarios
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper a technique is described for the joint exploitation of several multi-polarimetric SAR images, to the aim of yielding a separate tomographic reconstruction of each of the different Scattering Mechanisms (SM) (such as ground and volume scattering ) that contribute to the received signal. Under large hypotheses it will be shown that the data covariance matrix can be expressed as a Sum of Kronecker Products (SKP), after which it follows that K scattering mechanisms are uniquely identified by K(K-1) real numbers. This result provides the basis to perform SM separation by employing not only model based approaches, generally retained in literature, but also purely algebraic approaches, while yielding the best Least Square solution given the hypothesis of K SMs. Experimental results will be shown basing on airborne data relative to the forest site of Remningstorp, Sweden, acquired by DLR’s ESAR in the framework of the ESA campaign BioSAR2007. Furthermore, it will be shown that the SKP structure also provides a straightforward tool for discussing the well posing of the model inversion problem.

Experiments of Tomography-based Sar Techniques with P-band Polarimetric Data
New opportunities are arising in the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) observation of forest scenarios, especially with decimetric and metric radio wavelengths, which possess the capability of penetrating into volumes. Given its capabilities in the three-dimensional imaging of the scattering properties of the observed scene, SAR Tomography (Tomo-SAR) constitutes a good candidate for the analysis o...
متن کاملRadiometric Issues in Adaptive Polarimetric Sar Tomography
Multibaseline (MB) SAR tomography (Tomo-SAR) is an advanced mode of SAR interferometry, allowing full 3D imaging of volumetric and layover scatterers along the azimuth, range and height dimensions. Recently, this technique has also been extended in a polarimetric sense (PolTomo-SAR), exploiting MB SAR data acquired with different polarization channels. In this way, the joint estimation is possi...

Estimation of forest biomass has received much attention in recent decades. Airborne and spaceborne (SAR) have a great potential to quantify biomass and structural diversity because of its penetration capability. Polarizations are important elements in SAR systems due to sensitivity of them to backscattering mechanisms and can be useful to estimate biomass. Full Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture ...
متن کاملSar Tomography at L Band Applied to Forest Structure Analysis
The upcoming launch, scheduled for the next decade, of the BIOMASS and the TANDEM L space missions will have a special focus on forest applications. However, it is still necessary to research the amount and the quality of information relevant to forest structure parameters that those SAR sensors can possibly retrieve. SAR tomography is an advanced technique capable to measure the three dimensio...
متن کاملComplementarity of Sar Polarimetry and Tomography for Building Detection and Characterization
In this paper we propose to study the potential of jointly using polarimetric and tomographic SAR data to recognize and localize buildings in complex scenarios. We present extraction methods for both polarimetric and tomographic features. One the one hand, we propose to use the polarimetric bilateral filter that has proved to be a powerful tool to retrieve the polarimetric covariance matrix whi...
